Most holiday cards are read on a phone now, and sending one online costs nothing. Here are four free ways to do it, and how to make a text still feel like a card.

1. A photo in a text or WhatsApp

Take your family photo, add one line, and send it. It is the quickest card there is, and grandparents love it. Send it one by one rather than in a group chat, so nobody gets forty "Merry Christmas too!" replies.

A free sealed note turns your message into a link. They tap it and break a wax seal on an envelope to read it, so a text still feels like opening a card. Write the note, pick an envelope, press Seal it, then text or WhatsApp the link. There is no account, and nothing is stored: the message lives in the link itself.

3. An email card

Email suits clients, colleagues and anyone you only know by email. Put the message in the email itself rather than an attachment, keep the subject warm and plain (Happy holidays from the Garcias), and send each one on its own, not as a long list in the To line.

4. A post on social media

One post reaches everyone, but it is not a card: nobody feels it was meant for them. Use it as well as a few personal cards, not instead.

What to write

One or two lines is plenty: their name, one line about them or your year together, and a wish for the season. The holiday card messages guide has 60 to start from, for family, friends, coworkers, your boss, clients and teachers.

When to send

  • Texts, WhatsApp and sealed notes: the first two weeks of December, or on Christmas Eve for close family.
  • Email cards to clients: early to mid December, before offices close.
  • New Year cards: between Christmas and January 2.

Hosting instead?

If the card is really an invitation, send one that collects the replies too. Paper&Seal holiday party invitations open like a real envelope and are free for up to 25 guests.
